A historic merchants’ exchange by the port
La Llotja de Mar is the old merchants’ exchange of Barcelona, on Passeig d’Isabel II, in front of the port. Parts of it are medieval, and the new building opened in the autumn of 1802, during the celebrations for the weddings of two children of King Charles IV. Today the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona manages it.
The website lists ten rooms. The Saló de Contractacions is the main one: a hall 14 metres high, kept since the medieval period, with four columns and six arches that hold the wooden floors above. It has 709 m² and a maximum of 430 guests for lunch or dinner. The Saló Daurat is smaller (202 m²), with Damascus silk on the walls, gilded door frames and crystal chandeliers. Two of its marble statues, Conjugal Faith and Hymen, refer to marriage. The courtyard, with its arcaded gallery and a fountain of Neptune, receives up to 400 guests.
The site presents the building for weddings and other celebrations, and it also rents rooms for photo sessions and filming. It suits couples who want a formal, historic wedding in Barcelona itself. If you are planning from abroad, our Barcelona destination wedding guide covers the first steps.
For your photos
The Saló de Contractacions is tall and made of stone, so wide frames work best to show the columns and arches. Halls like this can be dim, so ask the venue how the room is lit and plan the timeline around it. The Saló Daurat is a small room with warm gilded details, a good place for a few indoor couple portraits.
The courtyard is the only open-air space on the list. It gives daylight and a covered gallery around it, which helps for portraits before the ceremony or between the ceremony and dinner. Almost everything else is indoors, so rain changes little. Set aside 30 to 45 minutes for portraits, and ask the venue where photography is allowed in each room.
