A good wedding day timeline in Barcelona starts from one number: the time of sunset. Place the ceremony about two and a half hours before it, keep the 40 minutes of golden light for the two of you, and let dinner begin as the sky darkens. This guide gives you the sunset time for the 15th of every month, explains golden hour and blue hour in minutes, and walks through a June and an October wedding hour by hour.

Build your wedding day timeline backwards from the sunset
In Barcelona the sun sets at 17:23 in mid-December and at 21:26 in mid-June. That is more than four hours of difference on the clock, so a schedule that works in June cannot be copied to October or December. Start from the sunset of your date and place everything else around it.
The rule we follow is simple. The outdoor ceremony starts about two and a half hours before sunset (three hours for a Catholic Mass of an hour). Ceremony, group photos and an hour of cocktail bring you to the moment when the sun is low. The couple then leaves the guests for portraits in the last golden light, and dinner starts as the sky turns blue.
The table gives the sunset for the 15th of each month in Barcelona, in local time (CET in winter, CEST in summer). We calculated it for 2027 with the NOAA solar position algorithm (41.3874 N, 2.1686 E, sea level), using the official definition of sunset: the upper edge of the sun at a flat horizon, its centre 0.833 degrees below. “Golden light starts” is the sun 6 degrees above the horizon, and “Blue hour ends” is the sun 8 degrees below it. We checked every month against the sunrise and sunset tables for Barcelona of the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (Observatorio Astronómico Nacional), and all twelve agree within one minute.
| 15th of the month | Golden light starts | Sunset | Blue hour ends | Clock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 17:04 | 17:46 | 18:28 | CET |
| February | 17:46 | 18:25 | 19:04 | CET |
| March | 18:21 | 18:58 | 19:36 | CET |
| April | 19:54 | 20:31 | 21:11 | CEST |
| May | 20:23 | 21:03 | 21:47 | CEST |
| June | 20:45 | 21:26 | 22:14 | CEST |
| July | 20:43 | 21:24 | 22:10 | CEST |
| August | 20:13 | 20:51 | 21:33 | CEST |
| September | 19:25 | 20:01 | 20:40 | CEST |
| October | 18:33 | 19:11 | 19:49 | CEST |
| November | 16:51 | 17:32 | 18:13 | CET |
| December | 16:38 | 17:23 | 18:06 | CET |
- Clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October (28 March and 31 October in 2027). On Saturday 30 October 2027 the sun sets at 18:49. A week later, on 6 November, it sets at 17:41. From year to year these times move by about a minute.
- Catalonia is small, so the time is almost the same everywhere. On 15 June it is 21:26 in Barcelona and Girona, 21:24 in Palamós and 21:33 in Lleida. In mid-December the Costa Brava has its sunset five to eight minutes earlier than Barcelona.
- These are times for a flat horizon. The IGN reminds us that hills and mountains can bring the real sunset forward by several minutes.
Golden hour and blue hour, in minutes
Golden hour is the time when the sun is low and the light turns warm, soft and directional. It is usually called the last hour before sunset. In Barcelona the warmest part is shorter: from the moment the sun is 6 degrees above the horizon until it sets takes 36 to 44 minutes, depending on the month. That is the window to protect for portraits.

Blue hour comes after sunset, when the sun is between 4 and 8 degrees below the horizon. In Barcelona it starts 17 to 20 minutes after sunset and lasts 21 to 28 minutes. The sky turns deep blue, the light is even, and candles, string lights and lit windows begin to show. After that, a portrait needs a light source: at Anna and Bernat’s wedding at Masia Montcorp, the headlights of a vintage car became part of the picture.

“Golden hour in Barcelona lasts about 40 minutes, not an hour. Plan the portraits for those minutes and the quarter of an hour after sunset.”

Ceremony, cocktail, portraits and dinner: season by season
The table applies the rule to six dates, for a ceremony of 30 to 40 minutes. For a Catholic Mass of about an hour, start 30 minutes earlier.
| Date | Sunset | Ceremony starts | Couple portraits | Dinner starts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 April | 20:31 | 18:00 | 19:55 to 20:35 | 21:00 |
| 15 May | 21:03 | 18:30 | 20:20 to 21:10 | 21:30 |
| 15 June to 15 July | 21:24 to 21:26 | 19:00 | 20:45 to 21:30 | 21:45 |
| 15 August | 20:51 | 18:15 | 20:10 to 20:55 | 21:15 |
| 15 September | 20:01 | 17:30 | 19:25 to 20:10 | 20:30 |
| 15 October | 19:11 | 16:45 | 18:30 to 19:15 | 20:00 |
Spring: April to mid-June
From mid-April to mid-May the sun sets between 20:31 and 21:03, and at 18:00 it is still 27 to 32 degrees high. Spring also brings grey days, and soft overcast light is kind to portraits. Emma and Sergi married at El Jardí de Calders on 12 April, when the sun sets at 20:29, and their ceremony under the red-leaved trees was held in soft overcast light. Mercedes and Jay married at Can Borrell on 30 May, when it sets at 21:17. Keep a covered plan B for the ceremony all the same.

Summer: mid-June to August
The sunset moves from 21:26 in mid-June to 20:51 in mid-August. At 14:00 in mid-June the sun is 72 degrees high, so we move the day towards the evening. A ceremony at 19:00 has the sun at 25 degrees, the couple slips away for portraits when the golden light begins at 20:45, and dinner starts around 21:45, which is normal for a summer evening in Spain. Edu and Míriam married at Mas Palau in Blanes on 27 July, when the sun sets at 21:13, and their portraits on the lawn were taken in golden backlight.

Autumn: September and October
The sunset moves from 20:01 in mid-September to 19:11 in mid-October. The sun is lower all day: on 15 October it is 40 degrees high at 14:00 and 22 degrees at 17:00. Temperatures are comfortable, and golden hour arrives before a normal dinner time, which makes autumn the easiest season to plan. Sílvia and Robert married in Llagostera on 28 September, when the sun sets at 19:38, and Anna and Bernat on 7 September, when it sets at 20:14. Autumn can bring heavy rain to Catalonia, so keep a covered alternative and check the AEMET forecast for Barcelona in the last week.

Midday sun in summer: what to avoid and what to do
In mid-June the sun reaches 72 degrees at around 13:50, almost overhead. Light from that angle puts hard shadows in the eyes and under the nose, makes people squint and burns out a white dress. It is also hot, with temperatures that can rise into the 30s. If your ceremony has to be at midday or in the early afternoon, because of a church slot or a civil ceremony, there are ways to make it work.
- Find shade for the ceremony: a porch, an arch, a line of trees. Ask your venue where the shade falls at your ceremony time.
- Keep the couple portraits for the evening. A 20-minute session at 20:30 gives better light than an hour at 15:00.
- Give guests water, fans or parasols, and keep the part in full sun short.
- Use rooms with large windows for family photos. Window light is soft at any hour.

In December the sun never rises above about 25 degrees, so a ceremony at 13:00 or 14:00 still has good light.
Coast or inland: the same sunset, a different light
Most of the Catalan coast, from Barcelona to the French border, faces east or south-east. The sun sets towards the west-north-west in June (azimuth 303 degrees) and the west-south-west in December (239 degrees), so it goes down behind the land and not over the sea. If you stand on a beach and look at the water, the low sun is behind you and lights the sea, the rocks and your faces with warm, even light. For a backlit portrait with the sun in the frame, we turn the couple towards the land. A sunset over the sea needs a view open to the west, and we check it on a map before promising it.

In summer a sea breeze often cools the coast, but wind can move veils and decoration. In the Empordà the tramuntana, a strong north wind, can blow hard.
Inland, in the Vallès, the Penedès or the hills behind the coast, the middle of the day is hotter and the evening cools faster. The main surprise is the horizon. In summer the sun sinks about 0.17 degrees per minute near the horizon, so a ridge 5 degrees high hides it about 30 minutes early. A hill 90 metres high one kilometre to the west is enough. See the place at the hour you plan to use it, or ask your photographer to check the direction of the sun on a map. We have photographed on both sides: inland at Can Borrell in the Vallès, and on the Costa Brava at Mas Palau and La Vaqueria de Mas Garriga. Our guide to planning a Costa Brava wedding has more on the region.
Church and civil ceremony times
Parishes usually have their own wedding hours, often with several weddings on the same day, and registry offices and town halls work with fixed slots. Ask for the available times before you book the banquet and the photographer.
If the church only has a slot at 12:30 or 13:00, you have a lunch wedding: the portraits move to the evening, and guests need something to do in between. If the parish allows 18:00 or 19:00 in summer, you are in the best situation. Another route is a short civil ceremony at the town hall, then a symbolic ceremony at the venue at the hour that suits the light. Our Barcelona wedding guide has an overview of legal and symbolic ceremonies.

If your date falls after the clocks go back (31 October in 2027), the sun sets before 17:45 on the clock. Move the whole afternoon about an hour earlier and keep the same order.
Checks before you fix the times
- Look up the sunset for your date: the table above, or the tables of the Instituto Geográfico Nacional for your province.
- Ask the parish, the registry or the town hall which ceremony times they offer.
- Ask your venue where the shade is at ceremony time and what the rain plan is.
- Keep a margin of 15 minutes between moments. Weddings run late, and the portrait window is the part that cannot move.
Every wedding has its own light, and we are glad to look at yours. If you tell us your date and the place, we can check where the sun will be and suggest a timeline. Write to us, or see more days like these in our real weddings.
